We often complicate our faith with countless rules, traditions, and obligations. But when asked to strip everything down to what truly matters, Jesus offers a strikingly simple answer. True religion is not about performative rituals; it is about love—a deep, undivided love for God that naturally flows into active care for others.

Hibla: The Message of the Readings

Today’s readings reveal how love for God and love for neighbor are inseparable. In Exodus, God commands us to protect the vulnerable, warning that He hears the cry of the poor because He is compassionate. Psalm 18 echoes this by praising God as our ultimate fortress and deliverer. St. Paul shows this truth in action, commending the Thessalonians for turning away from idols to serve God with joyful, active faith. Finally, Jesus brings these threads together in the Gospel by commanding us to love God wholeheartedly and love our neighbor as ourselves. The protection in Exodus and the lived faith in Thessalonica both rest on this single foundation: true love for God must be lived out through our care for others.

Hugot: Points to Ponder

It is easy to claim that we love God because God does not ask us for loans, test our patience, or bother us with difficult attitudes. But Jesus intentionally connects loving God with loving our neighbor. Our love for God is proven by how we treat the people right in front of us, especially those who cannot offer us anything in return.

When we hold back care from someone in need, or when we let indifference creep into our daily relationships, we break the very command that holds our faith together. God does not just want our worship on Sundays. He wants our compassion in our everyday lives.
