The Price of Truth
August 17, 2025
20th Sunday in Ordinary Time
| First Reading | Jeremiah 38:4-6, 8-10 |
| Psalm | Psalm 40:2, 3, 4, 18 |
| Second Reading | Hebrews 12:1-4 |
| Gospel Reading | Luke 12:49-53 |
The readings for this Sunday confront us with a difficult reality: following Christ is not always a path of worldly peace. Jeremiah was thrown into a muddy cistern for speaking God’s inconvenient truth, and Jesus himself warns that His message will bring fire and division, not placid agreement. Yet, in the face of conflict and the temptation to grow weary, we are called to persevere, fixing our eyes on the King who saves and the ultimate victory He has won for us.
Hibla: The Message of the Readings
Speaking God’s truth, as Jeremiah did, often invites rejection and can create painful division, just as Jesus foretold. Our faith calls us to persevere through these trials without losing heart, trusting that our King will ultimately rescue us from our deepest struggles.
Hugot: Points to Ponder
- Am I willing to endure misunderstanding and even conflict from those I love in order to remain faithful to the ultimate Truth, who is Jesus?
Hamon: The Challenge
This week, identify one relationship strained by division and commit to praying for that person daily, asking the Holy Spirit to bring peace and understanding.
