We are Salt and Light

February 08, 2026

5th Sunday in Ordinary Time
First ReadingIsaiah 58:7-10
PsalmPsalm 112:4-5, 6-7, 8-9
Second Reading1 Corinthians 2:1-5
Gospel ReadingMatthew 5: 13-16

Today’s readings felt like a map for healing.
Isaiah says that when we speak kindly, feed the hungry, and care for the afflicted, light rises in our darkness. The Psalm echoes it: Light shines through the darkness for the upright. And Jesus tells us: You are the salt of the earth. You are the light of the world.

Hibla: The Message of the Readings

Maybe purpose is not always a role. Sometimes it is presence.
Salt preserves and gives flavor. Light reveals and warms. Jesus did not say we will be salt and light—He said we are.

Hugot: Points to Ponder

Sometimes I wonder about my purpose—unmarried, without parents, still grieving. But Jesus did not define purpose by titles or roles. Maybe purpose is how we season and illuminate the lives we touch, even quietly, even imperfectly.

Hamon: The Challenge

This week, I will:

Do one quiet act of generosity no one will know about.

Speak one deliberate kind word each day.

Share something—food, time, or attention—with someone in need.
