How does your prayer sound like?

30th Sunday in Ordinary Time
First ReadingSirach 35:12–14, 16–18
PsalmPsalm 34:2–3, 17–18, 19, 23
Second Reading2 Timothy 4:6–8, 16–18
Gospel ReadingLuke 18:9–14

The readings this Sunday draw us into the heart of true prayer — one that rises from humility, not pride. Sirach reminds us that God is a God of justice who listens to the cry of the lowly, whose prayer “pierces the clouds.” Saint Paul, nearing the end of his mission, reflects with peace and gratitude that he has “finished the race” and “kept the faith,” trusting not in his own merit but in the Lord’s mercy. In the Gospel, Jesus contrasts the proud Pharisee and the humble tax collector, teaching that righteousness is not measured by status, ministry, or visibility, but by the sincerity of a contrite heart. Even those most active in Church service must remember: God exalts not the successful, but the humble.

Hibla: The Message of the Readings

God hears the prayer of those who approach Him in humility, not in self-righteousness.
Faithful service finds its worth not in recognition, but in remaining grounded before God’s mercy.

Hugot: Points to Ponder

When your service becomes visible, do you still pray like the tax collector — or have you begun to think like the Pharisee?

Hamon: The Challenge

Serve quietly this week without seeking credit, offering every act as a hidden prayer of humility before God.
