Sometimes we can become so focused on doing what is right that we begin to think God owes us something for it. We wonder why someone who seems less faithful, less deserving, or even sinful can receive the same blessings we have been praying for. But God does not measure love the way we measure merit.
Hibla: The Message of the Readings
God’s goodness is not a reward reserved only for those who think they have earned it. He is good because He is God.
Hugot: Points to Ponder
Sometimes our righteousness can quietly become a source of pride. We begin comparing: I have been faithful. I have sacrificed. I have tried to do what is right. Why does that person seem to have it easier?
But following God is not a contract where we accumulate points and expect Him to repay us.
Another person’s blessing does not make God’s love for us smaller.
Perhaps the real test of our goodness is whether we can rejoice when God’s goodness reaches someone we think deserves it less.
Hamon: The Challenge
This week, when you catch yourself comparing your life with someone else’s, stop and thank God for what He has already given you.
And when someone receives a blessing you think they do not deserve, try saying instead:
“Lord, thank You for being good to them, too.”
Let us serve God not because we expect to be rewarded more than others, but because we love Him.
