It is easy to think highly of ourselves when we see what we can do, what we know, or even how faithful we have been. But the readings today remind us that following God is not about proving that we are better than others. It is about becoming more like Christ.
Hibla: The Message of the Readings
The Psalm tells us that God teaches the humble His way. St. Paul makes it even clearer: we are called to let go of selfishness and vainglory and to have the same attitude as Christ, who humbled Himself and emptied Himself.
In the Gospel, one son said yes but did not go, while the other initially said no but eventually did his father’s will. Jesus reminds us that what matters is not how good we appear, but whether our lives truly say yes to God.
Hugot: Points to Ponder
The closer we come to Christ, the less reason we have to look down on others. Jesus did not use His greatness to make Himself greater than everyone else. He emptied Himself.
Perhaps humility is not thinking that we have nothing to offer. It is knowing that whatever we have is a gift and remembering that the gifts are not the measure of our worth but rather proof of God’s grace.
Hamon: The Challenge
Do not try to prove how gifted, faithful, or important you are. Simply be present, serve, listen, and let God use whatever He has given you.
We do not have to be the most impressive person in the room. We only have to be faithful to God.
