Why Do We Kill Ourselves with Greed?

27th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Second ReadingPhilippians 4: 6-9
Gospel ReadingMatthew 21: 33-43

We have everything we need—basic essentials and overflowing blessings. Yet, why do we always feel like it’s never enough? I watched a podcast clip of Kara David sharing an encounter with a fisherman. She told him to catch every fish in the river because there were so many. But the fisherman calmly replied: ‘What for? We can’t eat every fish we catch, and the river will still be here tomorrow. If we take everything now, the river might not give us anything tomorrow.’ This situation mirrors us deeply. In our endless thirst to have everything, we become greedy and forget what is truly essential.

Hibla: The Message of the Readings

In this Sunday’s readings (Isaiah 5 & Matthew 21), God is portrayed as the owner of a vineyard who provided everything for it to thrive. But the tenants wanted to own it all through greed and violence.

The same thing happens to us. Our endless “thirst” for more wealth, power, or material things drives us to a miserable life. Instead of being grateful for what we have today, we exhaust ourselves chasing things we cannot take to the grave, while ignoring what is truly vital.

Hugot: Points to Ponder

Have you ever felt spiritually empty despite having a job, a home, or gadgets? That’s because we’ve turned life into a game of greed, thinking happiness comes from having everything.

As Philippians 4 reminds us, God’s peace guards our hearts when we stop worrying and start focusing on what is true, pure, and noble. We don’t need the whole world to be happy; sometimes, we just need to know when to say, “This is enough, and I am grateful.”

Hamon: The Challenge

This week, let us challenge ourselves:

  • Count your blessings: List three things you have right now that are more than enough, and thank God for them.
  • Practice “enoughness”: Before wanting or buying more, ask yourself: “Do I truly need this, or is this just driven by greed?”
  • Let the river flow: Don’t exhaust all your energy consuming everything today. Leave room for contentment and peace tomorrow.
