Last Sunday, we received the urgent call to awaken and cast off the works of darkness, preparing ourselves for the coming of Christ, which what Advent literally means. As St. Paul gave us concrete ways to turn away from sin, this week the call intensifies through John the Baptist in the Gospel of St. Matthew: “Repent! For the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” John, the voice crying out in the wilderness, demands a visible change of heart, because the One promised—the descendant of Jesse, King David’s father—is about to establish a reign of total harmony and peace.
Hibla: The Message of the Readings
We are assured that the Messiah will restore a world where the strong no longer exploit the weak, revealing a peace deeper than politics or wounds; St. Paul’s letter to the Romans reinforces that this profound, faithful promise of God remains our ultimate hope, even in our troubled generation.
Hugot: Points to Ponder
We long for a peaceful world, but we don’t want the uncomfortable conversion required to straighten the crooked paths in our own hearts.
Hamon: The Challenge
Schedule time to go to confession this week, using John the Baptist’s call to “Repent” as your immediate motivation to clear the spiritual path for Christ.
