The Measure of Our Conviction
December 08, 2025
the immaculate conception of the blessed virgin mary
| First Reading | Genesis 3:9–15, 20 |
| Psalm | Psalm 98 |
| Second Reading | Ephesians 1:3–6, 11–12 |
| Gospel Reading | Luke 1:26–38 |
The readings from Ephesians ring with an astonishing truth: we are all “predestined” through Christ to be adopted children, chosen to be holy, blameless, and full of love. We share the same incredible potential for divine grace that Mother Mary received. But while she was prepared with the singular grace of the Immaculate Conception, the crucial difference lies in her response shown in the Gospel: the perfect, unqualified fiat. It wasn’t just her initial purity, but her sustained conviction and free will choice to fully swear allegiance to God’s plan. This day challenges us: we know we are predestined, but have we truly been convinced of this reality, and have we sworn, like our Mother, to fulfill it without reservation?
Hibla: The Message of the Readings
While St. Paul declares that we are all predestined for holiness (Ephesians 1), Mother Mary’s response to Angel Gabriel (Luke 1) demonstrates the necessary human element: a conviction so absolute that she could utter a perfect “fiat,” fully committing her free will to God’s already-spoken plan.
Hugot: Points to Ponder
We constantly pray, “Thy will be done,” yet we reserve the right to counter God’s predestined plan for our holiness with an endless stream of excuses, half-measures, and fear—a hesitant whisper where Mother Mary gave a resounding “Yes!”
Hamon: The Challenge
This week, identify the single greatest sacrifice (time, money, or comfort) God is asking of you right now, and choose to make that sacrifice immediately, signing it with a conviction as total as Mother Mary’s.
