Gospel ReadingLuke 2:16–21

The first day of the year begins not with resolutions, but with blessing. As the world welcomes the new year, we are reminded that every year we are given is already held in God’s gracious hands, and that Mary, the Mother of God, stands at the beginning of our journey with us.

Hibla: The Message of the Readings

The First Reading and the Psalm speak repeatedly of God’s blessing—of His face shining upon His people. In the Gospel, the shepherds experience this blessing firsthand as they behold God’s face—not in glory, but in a child born through Mary. What was once spoken as a prayer now becomes flesh and reality.

Hugot: Points to Ponder

There is something deeply calming and assuring about beginning the year with God’s blessing. In our ordinary, secular lives—filled with uncertainties, responsibilities, and struggles—we are invited to lift our eyes to God and trust that His favor rests upon us still.

Hamon: The Challenge

Begin each day of this year by consciously placing yourself under God’s blessing. Upon waking, make the Sign of the Cross and quietly pray: “Lord, let Your face shine upon me today.”
